C - Sections?

Postby gothgirl » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:03 pm

Hello,

We are hoping to get a pug bitch in the near future and would love to have a litter of pups off her.

My partner used to breed labradors for a few years and never had a problem, having looked at pugs for sale we've noticed a lot of bitches being sold that have had C-Sections, & litters of pups that have had to be hand reared.

Want to do as much research as possible before even considering breeding our bitch, so is it common for bitches to need C-Sections, like with bulldogs and is it common for bitches to reject whole litters of pups?

Thank You.

hi and welcome,
firstly i have never bred pugs, but i have alot of puggy friends so i will pass on what i know.Personally i would not recommend you doing it,pugs can have alot of problems during mating, pregnancy and birth.alot to do with the way they are made and their flat faces(alot different from what your hubby bred)firstly you have to look at the bitch, have all relevant health tests done, check out the history of its pedigree for health problems etc,you have to wait until at least 18 months or older, you then have to find a male stud dog, check out his pedigree and health tests etc,you have to pay to use him and there are no guarantees your bitch will take. You will need to have enough cash put aside for all the injections your bitch will need, scans plus it is a alot of cash for a c section, you could be paying all this out and end up with little or no pups, you have to have a pen area for the pups and they may need vet checks etc which is more cash,if the bitch does abandon them, then you will be the one feeding them around the clock,if and when it comes to selling them, you will have to check out all potential owners to see if they are suitable owners for a pug, alot of pedigree breeders sell their pups with a contract now(i have one on my newfie)that the new owner will not breed from the pup unless all relevant health tests are done on the new owners pup and the potential mate, also on a contract people say no sending the pup abroad and if anything happens in the future that the pup will come back to you.So you have to ask yourself,do i want to do this, can i afford to do this and is it worth the risk, i have puggy friends who have lost their dog through the birth, others who have lost all the pups.i would suggest that you really research the breed, the potential health problems and dog insurance and just get one to be your pet.Sorry if it is not what you want to hear, others may say different,
good luck
